OIL MAINTENANCE FOR ROTARY VANE VACUUM PUMPS

In order to achieve optimum performance and prolong the life of your pump it is vital that you maintain your vacuum pump oil. In the long run this can also prove cost saving as your pump will require fewer services.

Oil that is left to degrade unchecked can cause sub-par vacuum performance, and can cause damage to your vacuum pump such as seal swelling, sludge formation and increased wear.

Oil Degradation is caused by 2 main factors : Pump duty cycle & Application problems

Pump duty cycle factors that reduce oil lifetime are:

Cold running while trying to pump condensable vapors

•Not cleaning the oil up with the gas ballast

•Pumping at high inlet pressres in excess of 100mbar for prolonged periods

Application problems arise from:

•Chemical attack, acids and solvents

•Space restrictions

4 Recommendations to prolong the life of oil:

1.Change Oil regularly—either at recommended service interval or as oil color changes.

2.Allow adequate Cooling—eg air conditioning & space between pumps

3.Don’t place pump I small enclosed spacesAllow a minimum of 50mm on each side

4.Gas ballast and gas ballast oil return kit—should be used when pumping condensable vapors

In Conclusion, maintaining your oil is an easy and affordable way to prolong the life of your pump. The better the condition of you oil, the better vacuum you will achieve and the less damage and wear will be caused to your pump.

This is turn means fewer services & less downtime.
